Kevin: Me. A school secretary and hobbyist photographer.
Mogk: My family name that is often mispronounced. It is like bloke, but with an M and a silent bl.
S.T.E.A.M.: An acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math.
Bloke: British slang for a common [individual].
S.T.E.A.M. Bloke: Anyone who enjoys any of the aspects of S.T.E.A.M.
I grew up with both science and art around me. They both became interests as I contemplated space, our solar system through science-fiction, or as I used my whole, first roll of film to photograph nothing but gophers at Fort Whyte Alive—My parents were not impressed and warned me they would not buy me more film if I wasted it on gophers—as they popped in and out of their holes.
I never quite saw art and science as separate or opposing, rather two lenses that are often co-dependent as you look out on the world. It might explain why, when I took up film photography again not too long ago, that I felt at home both behind the lens exploring the world and light around us (no gophers … yet), and in the darkroom with its chemistry and blend of technical feeling methods that blend with story telling and art.
I work mostly in medium format with my Mamiya C3 TLR, but occasionally bring out my bellows camera and take four by fives. That said, there is something magical about those square 120 format negatives.
